![]() Is there a free Plex-like media server app or even a complicated nerdy way of being able to stream my video collection to remote devices over the WAN ( IE not just limited to my local wifi network)? I have the bandwidth (10mbit upstream) to just stream most files untouched, but transcoding-on-the-fly is nifty too. I found this Lifehacker article listing a bunch of home media server software, but absolutely none of them are completely free. You have to pay if you want to stream from your PC to your mobile device. I've never had a need for Plex, and I've always been more inclined to do things the nerdy complicated way (FTP server or OpenVPN is my kind of way of media streaming), but my sister wants me to use Plex because it is easy and simple enough for her and my parents to use, so I decided to check it out.Īfter getting it all set up, I realised that the mobile apps aren't free. ![]() So my sister is trying to get me to install Plex on my computer so that she and my family can stream my massive TV/movie collection from my computer to elsewhere.
